چکیده

We consider the optimal allocation of resources—power and bandwidth—between training and data transmissions for singleuser time-selective Rayleigh flat-fading channels under the cutoff rate criterion. The transmitter exploits statistical channel state information (CSI) in the form of the channel Doppler spectrum to embed pilot symbols into the transmission stream. At the receiver, instantaneous, though imperfect, CSI is acquired through minimum mean-square estimation of the channel based on some set of pilot observations. We compute the ergodic cutoff rate for this scenario. Assuming estimator-based interleaving andMPSK inputs, we study two special cases in-depth. First, we derive the optimal resource allocation for the Gauss-Markov correlation model. Next, we validate and refine these insights by studying resource allocation for the Jakes model.

Estimation of continuous flat fading MIMO channels

Multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems can provide high data rate wireless services in a rich scattering environment. In this paper, we study one of the proposals for MIMO systems, the Bell Labs Layered Space-Time (BLAST) architecture. Channel estimation using training sequences is required for coherent detection in BLAST. We apply the maximum-likelihood channel estimator and the optimal...

Optimal Adaptive Precoding for Frequency-Selective Nagakami-m Fading Channels

Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) systems with optimal power and bit loading are suitable for wired-line applications but have high complexity in wireless links because of the channel uctuations. Adaptive modulation is better suited in wireless communications, assuming that training sequences are periodically transmitted to allow an accurate estimate of the channel parameters. In these applications, ra...

Optimal training for block transmissions over doubly selective wireless fading channels

High data rates give rise to frequency-selective propagation, whereas carrier frequency-offsets and mobility-induced Doppler shifts introduce time-selectivity in wireless links. To mitigate the resulting timeand frequency-selective (or doubly selective) channels, optimal training sequences have been designed only for special cases: pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) for time-selective chan...

Average-rate optimal PSAM transmissions over time-selective fading channels

Enabling linear minimum-mean square error (LMMSE) based estimation of random time-selective channels, Pilot Symbol Assisted Modulation (PSAM) has well documented merits as a fading countermeasure capable of improving bit error rate performance. In this paper, we establish average-rate optimality of PSAM by showing that the insertion of equi-powered and equi-spaced pilot symbols in PSAM transmis...
